Joanna Borromeo

A Juno-nominated vocalist, pianist, and composer, Joanna Borromeo is influenced by some of the deepest, most beautiful musicians in history.

At the piano, she carves out a unique, polished style that takes on a life of its own; her mastery of the instrument produces a dynamic and multi-layered sound that plays with time and space in wholly satisfying ways. Adding to her depth as a musician - not to mention a respected songwriter - Joanna’s warm, dynamic singing style comes with kind of honed precision that doesn’t strive to be perfect, but to be all ‘soul’.

To date, Joanna has produced two albums: Through the Dark and Kaleidoscope, a record that earned her a Juno Award nomination for Soul/R&B Recording of the Year in 2014.

Rough Cuts

For NMC Rough Cuts presented by Bell, JUNO-nominated artist Joanna Borromeo shares the meticulous process behind writing, producing, and recording her neo-soul and funk-inspired ode to the life (and trials) of an artist, "Boulevard." NMC Rough Cuts presented by Bell is a podcast series by the National Music Centre (NMC). Over five episodes, we'll feature a handful of Canadian artists, who've produced an original song during a one-day recording session inside NMC’s famed studios at Studio Bell in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Hear the song, the story behind it, and learn what motivates each artist. The series is hosted by NMC's in-house engineer Graham Lessard (Basia Bulat, Kevin Drew, Reuben and the Dark, Stars, Timber Timbre), whose recordings have earned multiple JUNO Award nominations.

Wanna Love You

In 2014, Joanna released an R&B slow jam entitled, "Wanna Love You". The song was written in the spirit of Prince, a musical icon whose work has inspired Joanna for decades. Since it's release, "Wanna Love You" has caught the attention of choreographers and dancers around the world. The song was first picked up by a dance crew, named The Company, who competed in Body Rock 2014, an international dance competition held in the US. Written and co-produced by Joanna, the track also features the work of Melbourne-based producer, Häzel. Below are some videos dancers have posted over the years.
